Dr. Edwin Spencer
Edwin E. Spencer Jr., MD, originally hails from the coast of North Carolina and completed his undergraduate education from North Carolina State University, graduating summa cum laude. He then graduated from Duke University School of Medicine with distinction. He continued on, completing his orthopaedic residency at the University of Michigan, graduating with honors, and he also completed a fellowship in shoulder and elbow surgery at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation. While in residency and fellowship, he authored numerous research papers and book chapters and was inducted into the prestigious American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons Society. Subsequent research efforts have culminated in being awarded the Neer award, which is the highest award in shoulder surgery, in both 2011 and 2013.
Dr. Spencer specializes in all forms of shoulder and elbow surgery from replacements and revision replacements to reconstruction of the upper extremity and deformity cases to arthroscopic rotator cuff repairs and all other forms of arthroscopic surgery. He also specializes in caring for the throwing athlete and treating baseball injuries. He has pioneered reconstruction of the sternoclavicular joint. Dr. Spencer not only performs these surgeries, but also teaches national courses at the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons’ annual meetings as well as at the Orthopaedic Learning Center. In addition, he has helped design several different kinds of shoulder replacements. Most recently, he was voted by his shoulder surgeon peers as one of the top 28 shoulder surgeons in the USA. Dr. Spencer has enjoyed becoming involved in the local community. He has joined the Executive Board of the Great Smoky Mountain Council of the Boy Scouts of America with pride, as he is an Eagle Scout himself. He and his wife, Tracey, have two wonderful children who are involved with STAR (Shangrila Therapeutic Academy of Riding) and Knox Youth Sports.
Jeff Jarnagin, PA
As a certified Physician Assistant, P.A., Jeff works closely in surgery and clinic with Dr. Spencer to correctly diagnose and treat problematic shoulder and elbows.
Jeff always wanted to pursue a career in medicine where he could help people for a living. He has his Bachelor’s Degree from South University in Savannah, Georgia, and brings 12 years of emergency medicine experience to our team. He takes great pride in giving above standard care with the intent of informing all of his patients on what to expect from their appointment.
Jeff resides in Knoxville with his wife, Rebecca, and their three sons. He enjoys golf, snow and water skiing, fishing, as well as spending time with his family. Contact information can be found on the card in the folder that was provided to you during your visit.
Anita Barnes, LPN
As a Licensed Practical Nurse, LPN, Anita coordinates all aspects of patient care for Dr. Spencer’s team.
She graduated in 2017 from Tennessee College of Applied Technology in Knoxville. She has aspired to be a nurse from the time she was three years old. Anita is passionate about what she does because she loves to help people.
Anita has a fur baby, Opie.
When Anita is not at work she enjoys spending time with her family and friends, fishing, traveling, reading, and cooking.
Joshua Cluxton, Research Assistant
As Dr. Spencer’s research assistant, Josh works closely with Dr. Spencer to coordinate research efforts and clinical trials while maintaining data collection and clinic documentation during patient visits.
Josh studied Nursing at Scioto County Joint Vocational School in Southern Ohio. Josh moved to Knoxville from Portsmouth, Ohio in 2008, where he practiced as an LPN at Southern Ohio Medical Center in their E.R. He has worked in many different areas of healthcare throughout his twenty-five year career as a nurse.
Josh is passionate about serving patients on a daily basis and ensuring our team can consistently provide exceptional care.
In his free time, Josh enjoys spending time with his wife Starr and his two cats, Max and Marcy. Josh also enjoys going to church, fishing, kayaking, boating, and skiing.
